Factor Concentrates

Factor concentrates are preparations of high-purity, concentrated coagulation factors, derived from human plasma. During manufacturing, viruses can be inactivated and antigenic components removed with:

  • Pasteurization
  • Precipitation
  • Absorption
  • Filtration
  • Monoclonal purification

These steps along with diligent plasma collection and testing techniques, reduce the risk of pathogen transmission, including prions (though a theoretical risk remains because the source is a large pool of plasma donors).1

Unwanted constituents such as antibodies are removed, reducing the possibility of adverse reactions (including transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI)).1
